This series, “The New Standing Stones,” is inspired by thoughts of my great-great-grandfather who left his home in Aberdeenshire, Scotland – an area rich with ancient standing stones – and arrived in Southern Ontario to start a new life in a farming community that raised another kind of standing stone: the ubiquitous silo.

Knowing that every day in Ontario, we lose 319 acres of farmland to non-agricultural land uses like urban development and aggregate extraction, has caused me to reflect not only on my great-great-grandfather who lived and died on the farm, but also on the fact that these silos and the farmland they sit on are rapidly disappearing. This fact has prompted me to preserve these giants through my camera for all to witness as the ones still outstanding in their field.
